Presented for your consideration, an outstanding museum quality pair cased verge fusee by the English watchmaker James Bown, circa 1780.
This unique timepiece is also an impressive MEMENTO MORI because of its extremelly rare tortoshell (2nd) case, which has a circular window with its own original crystal, through which the following text is read:
"Tick, tick! I understand what you intend to say:
That sixty minutes make an hour, and twice twelve hours a day.
I, too, like thee, a pulse have got, and lay down when I'm dead,
But when I'm cleaned and oiled again, I raise my heavy head.
Not so with man, when once he falls, he never rises more,
Until the trumpet's awful sound shall wake him on that shore."
I have been told that keeping its own original fabric with the memento mori text from 1780 is extremelly unusual and desirable.
As seen at the pictures, its dial is in excellent condition, no dings cracks or even hairlines have been found. Main case is made of gilt metal and is signed by one of the most reknowed watch case makers of that time, Thomas Carpenter (TC). The movement is in very good condition and its is working strongly. Original crystals. I have attached to the watch a pocket watch key matching the winding arbour size.
MEASURES: inner case diameter: 41mm
Tortoshell outer case diameter: 48mm
Height: 66mm from the bottom of the outercase to the top of the hanging ring
ESTIMATED AGE: circa 1780
GENERAL CONDITION: very good/excellent general condition (please refer to the pictures). The watch is in running order.
