Presented for your consideration, an exquisite pair of antique Victorian, probably mourning, cufflinks or lapel pins made in 18K solid gold, green color enamel and table-worked hair in the shape of two tiny acorn nuts. They comes in their original jewellery box.
The adorable hair acorns were done using the table-work method which involved a round table top with a hole in the middle. The top of the table has numbers on it, marking off segments. A pattern is needed which sets out which number of bobbin should be use, and when. Hair with bobbins attached ate secured through the centre hole. Usually a mould is placed in the centre hole and the hair is woven around it. Once complete, the hair object is boiled in water, then dried in the oven. The mould is then removed.
The acorn nut symbolizes potential, strength, growth, and new beginnings, representing the idea that great things (like a mighty oak) can come from small starts, with meanings of luck, fertility, power, and perseverance found across Celtic, Norse, Greek, and Victorian traditions, often as a talisman for good fortune or a promise of future achievement.
These cufflinks can also be used separately as lapel pins.
These cufflinks will make a great addition to any Victorian mourning jewellery collection.
