ANTIQUE DETAILED CAMEO SHELL OF A BACCHANT (BACCHUS' PRIESTESS), CLASSIC GREEK MYTHOLOGY
Presented here, a beautifully detailed cameo shell depicting the side view of of a beautiful Bacchant. The Bacchants were women who were priestess or votaries of the God Bacchus in Greek mythology.
As it is well known, in ancient Greek religion and myth, Dionysus is the god of wine-making, orchards and fruit, vegetation, fertility, festivity, insanity, ritual madness, religious ecstasy, and theatre. He was also known as Bacchus or Bacchos by the Greeks (a name later adopted by the Romans) .
Here, we have one of these ladies, a Bacchant, immortalized by a great artisan over a shell as a cameo, paying especial attention to the detail and masterfully taking advantage of the natural color variations of the original shell, as can be appreciated on the dark color of the leaves decorating the beautifully curled hair of the Bacchant.
This beautiful handcrafted work of art is ready to be mounted as a brooch or as a medalion, at owner's preference.
